Fat Bastard.....
Accrding to the commercials for this wine, currently running 24/7 on the radio, Fat Bastard is a "cheeky little British phraze" that means "Whopingly great".
Well, I'm British, and I don't ever remember using it to do anything but to describe someone who was fat. Not that I mind the name, nor am I offended, I just don't want Americans comming up to me and saying "man, that's totally fat bastard dude"
And once again it amazes me that they can say Bastard, Bitch and Crap on the radio, but not shit ?!?!?!?!?

I don't think it's generally used to mean "whopingly great" (Whopingly ...?)
Alexi Sayle (remember him?) used to have a show where people would pop up and say "who is that fat bastard?" - so I suppose it could be used as an "insult-in-jest". But not to mean whopingly great.

I remember Alexi, in fact I just watched the young ones on BBC America. See when Alexi used Fat Bastard it was certainly refering to his own girth.
