Nativity scene mauled in attack
So a crazed man attacks a nativity scene damaging it badly enough so as to close the scene down.... Given my Atheist outlook , you might assume that I am pleased by this, That perhaps I might have some rhetoric justifying the attack on religious imagery, that I might at least leap to the defense of the perpetrator..... well you'd be wrong, and not for the obvious reason, if you have already read the story. I give you none of that because I for one do not have a problem with religious imagery. I am not offended by nativity scenes (My neighbor has one in their from yard right now, We even have a small one in our house) I am not offended by Christmas carols and other festive celebrations, we had the carol music on while we decorated our tree. I am not offended by the statue of the 10 commandments in the courthouse, I am not offended by the words "under god" in the pledge of allegiance (well not for religious reasons anyhow) , I am not offended because I am able to tolerate what others choose to display whether it reflects my beliefs or not, because I appreciate that what is good for one person may not suit all, and most importantly I am not threatened by this imagery of that which I do not believe in. Tolerance is a quality that religious types often rave about maintaining that "we" should be tolerant of others, an yet this noble trait is so infrequently displayed by those self same religious types that it is tantamount to hypocrisy.
LONDON (AFP) - A controversial waxwork nativity scene starring Britain's celebrity couple David and Victoria Beckham, as holy couple Mary and Joseph, has been mauled in an attack, the Madame Tussaud's museum said.
Obviously this action was not committed by one who believes as I do, apparently this imagery did not sit well with the individual responsible for this action and that individual was completely unable to restrain themselves and show the tolerance that I exercise 200 times a day.
The figures of the famous England captain footballer and former member of pop group the Spice Girls were pummelled in the face Sunday by a visitor to the London exhibit, according to an account in The Sun tabloid. The attacker, described as a man in his 20s, punched the two Beckhams but reportedly left the other wax figures, which include actors Samuel Jackson and Hugh Grant as shepherds, and Australian pop star Kylie Minogue as an angel, unscathed.
What a freak? well no, freak is not the right word, it suggests that his actions were unusual and that any number of other christians would not do the exact same thing, or worse. The fact of the matter is that this is just another example of the lack of restraint of the christian faith, and religion in general and the overall intolerance and close-mindedness that is the root of so much that is wrong with the world today. Sure it could be interpreted as disrespectful and offensive, but does that justify desecration. If I were to go over to my neighbors yard tonight and kick the crap out of their barn stall what would the headlines read, what would your sentiment be? would it be the same as what you feel while reading this story?
Finally, buried deep in this whole story is the greatest example of ironic humour that I have heard of in a very long time....
......also featured figures of US President George W. Bush British Prime Minister Tony Blair , and Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip playing the three wise men.
If that is not the funniest thing you heard read recently then you need your head examined.

What I think is sad, is whoever "pummelled the statues in the face" didn't fight with someone who could fight back. Duh! They're statues.
Hmph. The comment seemed funnier in my brain.

nevermind, :-)

Funny you should mention Courage and confrontation, at Thanksgiving there was a confrontation between the family cad and my wife. He verbally "confronted" her, completely out of the blue and later claimed that it took courage to take on confrontation, funny how he didn't Courageously confront me 5 minutes later and all his victims have so far been female or juvenile or canine.... and he has left the three men well alone. I don't know about anyone else but i don't see this as courage, in fact far more like cowardice. Woe betide him if he tries to attempt that on my wife again, she was caught unawares this time, next time she will be waiting for him, although judging by the rift in the family now (him vs the whole rest of the family, I don't expect she will be put to the test.
It's the bully factor. Bullies are mean to those who are unsuspecting or weak. When faced with someone who is their equal or stronger, they either bactrack and cover.
Since then things have deteriorated further despite best efforts from some of the other members of the family to stay out of it in the interest of not compleatly alienating that wing of the family, the troublemaker has stired the pot trying to justify his actions with attacks on the charicter of those very self same somewhat neutral members. His action and their responces have completed the polarisation of the family, things are getting worse not better.
That's too bad. I forgot about the justification kind of bully. The one that tries to manipulate others to take sides. Of course, that would make sense (to them). I'm sorry you're having to experience this. :(
I'm sorry that he is such an asshole, but given that I can't control that I am actually quite glad that this blew up. I am happy that I now know what I do and that while my ignorance of his personality was bliss I now am far better informed.
